Strategy for a strong future Our responsibility

Sustainability as the guiding principle of our actions

Acting responsibly - today for tomorrow

Our path to greater climate stability and fairness

For J.J. Darboven, sustainability is far more than just a buzzword - it is part of our identity. As a family-run coffee roaster with over 150 years of history, we take responsibility for people, the environment and product quality along the entire value chain. Because we are convinced that quality, responsibility and sustainability are inextricably linked.

The challenges of climate change are palpable - especially for coffee cultivation. Extreme weather, water scarcity and the loss of biodiversity are endangering the livelihoods of many coffee farmers. That is why we rely on well thought-out measures: from energy-efficient roasting technology and fair supply chains to recyclable packaging solutions.

Our claim is clear: we don't just want to make good coffee - we want to do good.

A look at our value chain

Responsibility right from the start

In order to understand the impact of climate change on our business and respond to it at an early stage, we take a holistic view of our supply chain. From cultivation to processing and logistics to delivery: changes in the climate influence the availability, quality and price of our raw materials - and also present our sales structures with new challenges.

Sustainability is strategically anchored at J.J. Darboven. As an internationally active coffee roaster, we face up to the ecological, social and economic impact of our actions - with clear structures, binding standards and a future-oriented strategy.

Sustainable action begins with good corporate governance

Corporate responsibility

Clear structures for responsible action

A central sustainability team coordinates all measures within the company and reports regularly to the Executive Board. Training, transparent communication and a binding code of conduct for employees and suppliers provide clear guidance. This is supplemented by integrated risk management, which systematically takes sustainability issues such as human rights, environmental risks and corruption prevention into account.

Values that connect

Tradition, responsibility and entrepreneurial foresight

For four generations, J.J. Darboven has stood for reliability, quality and partnership-based entrepreneurship. Our Hanseatic attitude reflects prudence, a down-to-earth attitude and the aspiration to act sustainably.

A small coffee business in Hamburg has grown into an internationally successful company with branches throughout Europe. Every step we take is characterized by prudent management with foresight and respectful treatment of the people we work with.

Environmental and climate protection as a corporate responsibility

Ecological commitment

Climate

We record and analyze our greenhouse gas emissions according to Scope 1, 2 and 3 and implement targeted reduction measures. In 2023, we were able to reduce Scope 1 by 12.8% and Scope 3 by 3.6%. We rely on sustainable cultivation methods and are working on the 1.5 °C target with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Social commitment

Taking responsibility. Helping to shape society.

Social commitment has always been part of J.J. Darboven 's corporate culture. Whether cultural exchange, help for families in difficult situations or the preservation of urban identity - we specifically support projects that strengthen the community and create prospects.

Intercultural dialog "Switch - Around the world in 4 days"

"Strangers are friends we don't yet know." - This is the idea behind the "Switch" project of the Kulturbrücke Hamburg e. V. association. Over four days, children and young people get to know other cultures at first hand and experience the diversity of our society at first hand. J.J. Darboven supports this project, which promotes tolerance and understanding through play.

Help for families Ronald McDonald House with Oasis

When children fall seriously ill, their families also need a safe place. The Ronald McDonald House with Oasis in Hamburg-Altona offers parents a temporary home - directly on the grounds of the children's hospital. J.J. Darboven provides support by sponsoring the roof terrace and regularly supplying the oasis with coffee, tea and cocoa. So that closeness and security are not neglected even in stressful times.

Monument preservation with heart Sponsorship for the Brooks Bridge

The Brooksbrücke is a historic landmark in Hamburg's Speicherstadt warehouse district - and a symbol of the city of commerce that is Hamburg. Albert Darboven has been the sponsor of this traditional building since 2003 and financed the reconstruction of the four bronze sculptures, which stand for cosmopolitanism, trade and cultural ties. A commitment that preserves the past and creates the future.
