J.J. Darboven presents the Sustainability Report 2023
Working together for a sustainable future
Hamburg, January 2025 - J.J. Darboven, one of the leading companies in the hot beverage industry, is publishing its new Sustainability Report for 2023, which shows how the company assumes environmental, social and economic responsibility along the entire value chain.
"Sustainability has been an integral part of our corporate culture since our foundation. In our sustainability report, we show how we are driving the issue forward with the greatest possible transparency, honesty and integrity. In doing so, we also want to underline our claim to be a pioneering force in the industry," says Albert Darboven, Managing Partner of the family-owned company.
The report covers key topics such as
- Reduction of emissions: in 2023, direct emissions (Scope 1) were reduced by 12.8%, partly through investments in more energy-efficient technologies such as modern roasting plants. The aim is to achieve energy savings of over 30% by 2030 by gradually modernizing the roasting systems.
- Sustainable procurement: The company will source all of its green coffee responsibly by 2030.
- Increase the proportion of certified coffee (Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, EU organic) to 30% by 2030.
- Innovative packaging solutions: The aim is to use 100% recyclable product packaging by 2030.
- All employees are to be empowered through further training and health programs.
Science-based climate targets set new standards
An important strategic step is joining the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2024, which commits J.J. Darboven to science-based climate targets that are in line with the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement. A particular focus is on the FLAG standard (Forest, Land and Agriculture). This is the world's first framework for companies in land-intensive sectors to set targets that include the reduction and elimination of emissions from land use. "By committing to the SBTi, we are reaffirming our commitment to taking responsibility for future generations and making our contribution to climate protection," says Juliane Schröder, Head of Sustainability at J.J. Darboven.
Focus on responsibility: practical help at source and innovative monitoring of supply chains
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the cultivation of coffee, tea and cocoa. The shade tree project in Honduras and Peru shows what concrete help and solutions can look like on the ground: the planting of shade trees helps to protect the sensitive coffee plants from the effects of climate change. The trees also help to improve soil quality and biodiversity and can provide an additional source of income for coffee growers.
In addition, the coffee farmers will benefit from a Fairtrade premium of 1.2 million euros in 2023, the use of which they will decide collectively.
The launch of the collaboration with osapiens to comply with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) marks a milestone in supply chain management since 2024. The AI-supported platform enables efficient monitoring and documentation of supply chains. In this way, J.J. Darboven ensures compliance with national and international social and environmental standards and thus enables even more sustainable business practices.
Employee development and social commitment
The employees are at the heart of J.J. Darboven. Their promotion and development is therefore also at the heart of the corporate strategy. Among other things, the newly introduced concept of trusted persons strengthens internal dialog and the corporate culture. In addition, cooperation with the Elbe workshops has been intensified.
Our aim is to have a positive impact on people and the environment - from the plantation to the cup. We invite all stakeholders to join us on this journey," explains Juliane Schröder.
