Darbohne

A little coffee bean with a rich history

At J.J. Darboven, we love coffee beans. Even though we unload, roast, grind and process several hundred thousand coffee beans each day in order to produce delicious coffee – one coffee bean has made a particularly strong impression over the years: Darbohne. Our faithful mascot with her rounded bean belly and permanently cheerful smile was one of the first comic figures in Germany to have been used by a company for advertising purposes. As early as the 1920’s and 1930’s, lovingly designed comics told the adventures of Darbohne in rhyming verse – for instance, about how she had travelled to Germany in a coffee bag from a coffee plantation in distant South America before joining J.J. Darboven in 1927.
This was the very first story that featured Darbone and because it did so much to help carry our company, we have redeveloped it into a film: of course this film contains frames from the original comic and, as it should be, rhyming verse - read by Albert Darboven himself by the way. But seeing as we are no longer writing from the perspective of 1927, the film tells the story, almost 100 years later, of the birth of Darbohne and of her evolution: Darbohne has not just changed visually over the years. She has also grown more mature overall and is involved with social and sustainability projects alongside J.J. Darboven. Take a look inside and discover what Darbohne experiences nowadays.

How Darbohne came to Hamburg

Our mascot on a journey of adventure

The great crossing from America to Hamburg was just one of Darbohne’s many stories. Later she got to know Hamburg, then all of Germany and at some point she even flew to Mars! On her adventures, Darbohne kept on making exciting acquaintances: She met with Mickey Mouse in person, encountered garden gnomes and elves and even made friends with an alien. As you can see, it was never boring with Darbohne. However, besides her career as a comic star and adventurer, Darbohne also had another task: She acted as brand ambassador for J.J. Darboven and often appeared in advertising material for our coffee – that is, if coffee was available at all: during the Second World War, when J.J. Darboven had to put its coffee production on hold due to the lack of coffee beans and switch to Koff, its coffee substitute beverage, Darbohne was also away for a long time. Darbohne’s life has always been closely tied to J.J. Darboven’s business - so much so that for a while we devoted ourselves to giving her her very own coffee.

Darbohne Comics

When a new series of Darbohne comics was released in 2006, she told the readers much more about the origins and the production of coffee. She travelled around the cultivation countries in South America and Africa and went on all kinds of coffee-related adventures together with her friends at J.J. Darboven. In addition to her journeys, she succeeded in entertaining young and old readers with exciting riddles, educational games and experiments. You can find and browse through the comics from 2006 here:

I’ve barely changed since 1927? Thank you, neither have you!

Historical Issue 1

Plenty of experiences and plenty to tell

We are delighted that Darbohne has found a new home on this website. What does that mean? It means that soon you will be running into Darbohne more often around here. Be ready for entertaining meetings and exciting stories – one thing is for sure:

I know my coffee beans – after all, I am one!

During her journeys, Darbohne has gathered plenty of experiences and naturally she wishes to share her knowledge of coffee (beans) with you. But Darbohne also knows to talk about other things – for example about our social activities for coffee farmers and their families on site in the cultivation countries. Or about our sustainable approach to raw materials and energy. Because, just like us as a company, Darbohne considers it her responsibility to lead by example and to provide the world with more than just extraordinary taste and a cheerful smile.
