J.J. Darboven improves recyclability: COCAYA switches to
certified mono laminate film

J.J. Darboven is gradually converting the COCAYA Premium Green range to a recyclable PEmet mono film. The new packaging can be fed into the recycling loop and is part of the Hamburg-based hot drinks expert's sustainability strategy. The 1 kg foil bags for COCAYA Premium Organic and COCAYA Classic Organic will be launched in March, with COCAYA Premium Vegan expected to follow from July 2026 and COCAYA Super Fine from fall 2026.
As a natural product and foodstuff, cocoa requires protective packaging. J.J. Darboven therefore aims to combine sustainable packaging solutions with the highest quality standards. The company relies on materials that can be recycled as far as possible after use - such as the new packaging for COCAYA made from metallized polyethylene. This is made up of several layers of the same plastic group (polyethylene/PE), whereas conventional composite films consist of different, non-separable materials. This means that the film remains unmixed and recyclable. It also provides the necessary barrier protection for food packaging, thus ensuring the quality and freshness of the cocoa.
"The packaging has been awarded the 'Made for Recycling' certificate by the Interzero Recycling Alliance and achieved a 'Very Good'* rating," says Karina Marques, Marketing Manager at COCAYA. "By converting the COCAYA range to recyclable mono-laminate film, we now have a packaging solution that is 98% recyclable, while fully maintaining product quality. The changeover to the new material is taking place gradually: Before we switch the Green Range completely to the new mono laminate film, we will consciously use the existing stocks to the end in terms of a resource-conscious approach."
