90th birthday of Albert Darboven

"Coffee is only harmful if a whole bag falls on your head from the fifth floor." With his Hanseatic entrepreneurial spirit and a pinch of North German humor, Albert Darboven has been shaping German coffee culture and the family business J.J. Darboven for over six decades. For him, coffee is far more than just a product - it is a life's work that he is still passionate about every day.

In 2026, the Hamburg-based hot beverage specialist will be celebrating two special events: On April 15, owner Albert Darboven celebrates his 90th birthday. Just a few weeks earlier, on March 21, the traditional company celebrates its 160th anniversary.

The family business has always combined Hanseatic merchant tradition with innovative coffee culture and is now internationally successful with well-known brands such as IDEE KAFFEE, EILLES and Café Intención. However, the Hamburg-based company not only refines selected coffee beans in its own roasting plants, but also creates high-quality tea and cocoa specialties. Whether in the catering, hotel, bakery or retail sectors, J.J. Darboven has established a name for itself throughout Europe as the preferred partner for coffee, tea and cocoa with its comprehensive hot drinks expertise and is the German market leader in the out-of-home market.

Pioneering spirit since 1866

When Johann Joachim Darboven founded his company in Hamburg, an extraordinary success story began that continues to this day. Starting out as an innovative mail order business for roasted coffee and sugar cubes, the business developed into an international family company with currently 15 subsidiaries in nine countries.

The connection to the Port of Hamburg as a central transshipment point for green coffee, tea and cocoa from all over the world has shaped the company's identity from its beginnings to the present day. An important milestone was the introduction of IDEE KAFFEE in 1927, which is still a central product in the range today thanks to its refinement process. With the takeover of traditional companies such as EILLES (1987) or the Bavarian roasting company Burkhardt & Imhof(Burkhof) (1974) and the introduction of Fairtrade coffee under the Café Intención brand (1993), the entrepreneur has always demonstrated foresight and a sense of social responsibility.

Born Albert Hopusch in Darmstadt in 1936, his life took a decisive turn when he was adopted by his great-uncle Arthur Darboven and his wife Anna-Maria after the early death of his father in 1948. After completing his secondary education at the Louisenlund boarding school, Albert Darboven began his training as a foreign trade merchant in March 1953. His first professional stations took him to the Bernhard Rothfos company and a coffee agency in London - and thus into the international world of the coffee trade at an early stage.

Between 1954 and 1960, he gained valuable experience as a coffee buyer in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, directly in the countries where coffee originated. These years on the ground not only sharpened his eye for quality, but also gave him a deep understanding of the people, the product and the markets. On his return, he brought this foundation of practical experience and a deep understanding of coffee as a product to the family business, which he took over in the 1960s.

Under his leadership, J.J. Darboven developed into an international player without neglecting its Hanseatic roots and family traditions. The brand name "Idee-Kaffee", which was created back in 1915 with the well-known slogan "For the joy of life", remained at the heart of the company.

In addition to his entrepreneurial activities, Albert Darboven has passionately devoted himself to horse breeding at his own IDEE stud farm since 1973. With Pik König's Derby victory in 1992, he wrote a special chapter in Hamburg racing history: for the first time, a horse won the Derby that had been bred in Hamburg by its Hamburg owner.

Tradition meets the future

Even 160 years after the company was founded, the values at J.J. Darboven have not changed: "As a hot drinks expert, our aim remains to continue to set new standards for our customers with quality, sustainability and innovation". With clear goals for the coming years - such as responsible green coffee procurement and fully recyclable packaging by 2030 - J.J. Darboven is setting the course for a sustainable future today.
