Our power is going green: Starting in 2018, we will purchase certified green electricity from Scandinavian hydropower for Hamburg and Sauerlach. This will save us around 2,590 tonnes of CO2 per year.
In autumn of 2017, we invested in a new roasting plant at our site in Sauerlach. A special feature is the low energyconsumption: Since roasting and cooling no longer take place in one chamber, it no longer needs to be heated and cooled alternately. In addition, the heat from the roasting chamber is used to preheat our green coffee so that no energy is wasted. Depending on the weather and the type of coffee, the new roaster uses about 20% less natural gas than its predecessor.
By the end of 2020, we intend to replace 30% of the existing lighting in Hamburg's production and logistics areas with LEDs. For new buildings such as the administration building in Hamburg and the warehouse in Sauerlach, we use only LED lighting right from the start.
90% recycled content in cardboard boxes
Currently the proportion of recovered paper in all cardboard packaging purchased from J.J. Darboven is just under 90%. But that's not enough for us: We are currently checking all our cardboard boxes to see whether we can increase the proportion of recycled paper - to 100% if possible.
99% less aluminium in flow pack films
By changing the composition of our laminated films, we want to make our flow pack films more environmentally friendly. We expect this to lead to savings of around 44 tonnes of aluminium per year.
Coffee peel becomes energy
When roasting coffee beans, the outer coffee skin loosens. In 2017, 283.66 tonnes of coffee skins were produced. Starting in 2018, these will be fermented into biogas in a biogas plant and used as a climate-friendly and regionally available energy source.
In order to achieve the legal requirements of a separate collection rate of 90% at our German sites, we conscientiously separate the waste generated at our sites. In Hamburg, the composite and mono films already separated from the residual waste will also be heavily pressed in future through the use of special baling presses. We expect this to save 75% during composite film collection and 90% during mono film collection in 2018 compared to 2017.
At our Hamburg site, we will introduce a multi-use system with reusable takeaway cups in 2018. We replaced the 40,000 disposable ballpoint pens used annually as "giveaways" with refillable ballpoint pens. In 2017, a total of 91,400 disposable plastic cups were used in our water dispensers. From mid-2018, we will be using paper cones at both sites, which can be disposed of with the waste paper.
We promote the health of our employees with more than just occupational safety measures. A Health Day was also held for the first time at our Hamburg location. On that occasion our employees tested their stress level and used body analysis scales. They learned how to strengthen their backs and to consider ergonomics at the workplace in a practical way.
For J.J. Darboven, integrating and supporting people with limited starting opportunities is a part of corporate
responsibility. For many years now, we have been employing people with disabilities in our company, who assemble articles by J.J. Darboven in an external working group at the Elbe workshops.
From 2019/2020 one of our apprentices will be trained as an Energy Scout for the project offered by the Chamber of Commerce. First he or she will attend a seminar and consequently implement a measure to improve energy
efficiency in our company within the framework of the project.
Most employees remain loyal to our company for a long time. This is also due to our many additional services: For
example, we subsidise the company pension scheme, our canteen, and the Hamburg public transport ticket, offer
leisure accident insurance, and offer our employees staff sales. In order to further improve employee satisfaction, in autumn 2017 they were asked about what was on offer in the canteen. We are now working on implementing their suggestions and ideas.

Since 2010 we have taken on approximately 80% of our apprentices after they completed their training.
