Hamburg, October 2019 – J.J. Darboven, a company with a long tradition, works continuously to make its processes more sustainable and environment-friendly. This includes improving the recyclability of products and packaging. J.J. Darboven has therefore set itself the target of switching its entire Tea Diamond® line, currently shipping 44 million Pyramid bags each year, to biodegradable material.
The company has already converted the Pyramid bags of the organic EILLES TEE Tea Diamond® range and SANSIBAR and PLATEANUM® tea brands to compostable PLA material. PLA (polylactic acid) is made from natural and renewable raw materials. “Sustainability is something that must always be seen in its overall context. At EILLES TEE the conversion to sustainable packaging and materials is an ongoing process, which is continuously evolving,” explains Karen Lässig, Tea Taster and Marketing Manager at J.J. Darboven. Biodegradable material is used for the Pyramid bag itself as well as for the string and the label. The Tea Diamond® Pyramid bags can be disposed of in the organics bin.

With the Deco Box line J.J. Darboven is taking a further step in sustainability. “All the components of this product range are made with renewable raw materials. Thus, we are taking sustainability into account in all areas of J.J. Darboven and EILLES TEE,” reports Lässig. The inside film liner of the Deco Boxes is NatureFlex, a renewable cellulose with airtight properties. The boxes themselves are of recyclable cardboard made of a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) mix. The switch to these materials is part of a comprehensive integration of sustainability in J.J. Darboven’s business.
Sustainability at J.J. Darboven:
From the company’s earliest beginnings, taking responsibility has been one of the most important principles of J.J. Darboven. Forward-looking management, and social engagement for employees at international locations as well as coffee growers and partners in source regions, have always been deeply rooted in the culture of this family-owned and operated company. Reflecting this, in 2017 J.J. Darboven set up the cross-departmental Sustainability Project Group, to promote sustainability improvement in all areas of the company. The Group measures key indicators, examines new opportunities and improves methods, in order to contribute to a sustainable future through resource-saving practices and fair long-term partnerships.
