Our Wholesale and Foreign Trade Managers are active in the fields of marketing and trade (amongst others), the purchasing of raw materials, and the verification of incoming goods. To me, Darboven doesn’t just mean a good apprenticeship at a traditional company. It also means a diverse working environment and integration.

Here it’s all about achieving goals and being successful together

Eileen H.

In addition to the good working environment, I particularly enjoy that the independent work ethic
at Darboven allows me to gather extensive experience in all of the company’s departments.

The many corporate benefits as well as working with the exciting product of coffee are what sets
the apprenticeship programme apart.

Ole C.

What is the content of the apprenticeship and in which fields will I be active?

Experience the many facets of the job early in your apprenticeship. You will not only be taught the theory, but will
also be given practical tasks under the supervision of an instructor:

  • Procurement and logistics
  • Product purchasing and assortment
  • Sales and customer orientation
  • Marketing
  • Bookkeeping
  • Team work, communication, and task management

As a business person it is important to get to know all relevant company procedures and to understand the links
between the individual departments. In order to make this possible, you will carry out practical placements in the
following areas: Procurement of green coffee, procurement of materials, customer service, export, logistics,
marketing, trade, and quality assurance. There are experienced training supervisors in every department who will
ensure that the content of the apprenticeship is taught understandably.

What are the requirements for the apprenticeship?

Ideally you hold a good intermediate or high-level school diploma (German Abitur). You should also be interested in commercial activities and should enjoy working in a team and in various areas of responsibility. With the following qualities, you will be perfectly suited to working in Wholesale and Foreign Trade Management:

  • A positive mindset: You believe in yourself and your abilities.
  • The ability to learn fast: You are able to apply new skills quickly.
  • An understanding of numbers: You are confident when handling basic mathematics.
  • Autonomy: You ask questions and pro-actively engage with co-workers.
  • Initiative & engagement: You want to get ahead and be involved.

How long does the apprenticeship last?

The apprenticeship lasts 3 years in total. However, it is possible to shorten this period with good academic and professional performances. The following applies:

  • If you hold an intermediate-level high school diploma (or equivalent), the length of the apprenticeship can be shortened by up to 6 months.
  • If you hold a technical high school diploma/Abitur (or if you have already completed an apprenticeship), the length of the apprenticeship can be shortened by up to 12 months.

How does the dual apprenticeship system work?

A dual apprenticeship takes place in two locations: At a company and at a vocational school. Lessons at the
vocational school are taught two days per week and follow the Hamburg school holiday schedule.

Is it possible to do go abroad?

Yes, it is possible to gain a deeper insight into business activities abroad at one of our international subsidiaries. This can help you get to know different business habits in different countries.

The time abroad generally takes place at a subsidiary of choice during the school holidays and lasts from two to four weeks. Find out more about the international business relationships at J.J.Darboven here.

Is it possible to then be hired permanently?

J.J. Darboven places great importance on staff development planning and we want to retain qualified employees, one of which you will be after their training, in the long term. As we are a constantly growing company, we can offer a permanent position to the majority of our apprentices at the end of a successful apprenticeship. The requirements for this are a successfully-completed apprenticeship at our company as well as a vacancy in the chosen department.

Seeing as you will be placed in various departments during your apprenticeship, we can support you individually and work to develop your strengths together. When choosing your department, we will take your skills and inclinations into consideration and always give you the possibility to express your wishes in order to find the right department for you.

What future prospects does the apprenticeship provide?

You will discover different business departments and will be able to determine the appropriate focus for your future position.
