  • HOMECareer Apprenticeship Mechatronics Technician

Apprenticeship for Mechatronics Technicians

This is one of the most popular trade apprenticeships and almost no other job has changed as much in the last ten years as that of a Mechatronic Technician. Nowadays mechatronics has inevitably become interwoven with technology, meaning the requirements of an apprenticeship have had to be redefined.

Mechatronics Technicians work at the interface of industrial and electrical jobs. The rapid development of the job covers everything from turning screws to handling complex mechatronic systems with delicate electronics. All of this needs to be controlled and adjusted in order to maintain our heavy machinery. Fault-finding can become real detective work here. You will support our experts in metal technology as well as in electro technology and electronics.

At J.J. Darboven, you will be working in our automated production facilities getting to know the production, commissioning, and maintenance of the machinery. By doing so, you will make an important contribution to the sustainable production of our high quality products.

After being trained by J.J. Darboven for 3.5 years, I was successful in passing my final examination. I found the apprenticeship challenging and diverse. I particularly liked the positive work environment and the competent support of more experienced colleagues. I was very happy to be offered a permanent position and I look forward to my future at J.J. Darboven

Luca C.

What is the content of the apprenticeship and in which fields will I be active?

During your apprenticeship you will be supervised by experienced training supervisors who will ensure that the contents of the apprenticeship are passed on effectively. You will become familiar with the following areas, among others:

  • Production, assembly, and testing of our machinery
  • Commissioning of new systems that are in line with state-of-the-art technology
  • Quality management
  • Maintenance and repairs of machines, facilities, and production systems
  • Planning and management of working procedures
  • Installation and testing of hardware and software components
  • Team work, communication, and task management

In order for you to get to know and understand all relevant company processes, when learning about maintenance you will get to know all the different production plants. Thanks to this you will be able to bring the various steps of the process into context.

What are the requirements for the apprenticeship?

You hold at least a good intermediate-level high school diploma and should have a good understanding of mathematics and physics as well as a quick grasp of new things. Good technical understanding, spatial awareness, and abstract, logical thinking are advantageous. We expect team work, reliability, and a responsible work ethic. And of course you should enjoy working with machinery.

How long does the apprenticeship last?

The apprenticeship lasts three and a half years in total, but through good academic and professional performances, it is possible for this period to be shortened. The following applies:

  • If you hold an intermediate-level high school diploma (or equivalent), the length of the apprenticeship can be shortened by up to 6 months.
  • If you hold a technical high school diploma/Abitur (or if you have already completed an apprenticeship), the length of the apprenticeship can be shortened by up to 12 months.

How does the dual apprenticeship system work?

A dual apprenticeship takes place in two locations: At a company and at a vocational school. Lessons at the
vocational school are taught two days per week and follow the Hamburg school holiday schedule.

Is it possible to then be hired permanently?

J.J. Darboven places great importance on staff development planning and we want to retain qualified employees, one of which you will be after their training, in the long term. As we are a constantly growing company, we can offer a permanent position to the majority of our apprentices at the end of a successful apprenticeship. For this, your apprentice with us must have been completely successfully and there must be a suitable position available.

We will take your skills and inclinations into consideration when choosing a suitable permanent position and will
always allow you the possibility to express your wishes.

What future prospects does the apprenticeship provide?

You can look forward to an exciting time in your apprenticeship which will provide you with the optimal
qualifications for your further professional development. Mechatronics Technicians are in high demand both
throughout Germany and abroad. As a qualified Mechatronics Technician at J.J. Darboven, you will benefit from
Germany’s and the company’s excellent reputation in manual trades.
